Islam: Does hijab make me less beautiful?

The purpose of hijab is to ensure that the modesty of a woman is protected and that any obscene and illicit intentions towards the woman are avoided. It is compulsory for Muslim women to wear hijab or anything that covers the parts that can bring unwanted attention from the opposite sex. Only in the presence of her family and Mahram is she allowed the exception.

Wearing hijab for the intention of being in the good grace of Allah is well respected and loved. However if a she were to wear hijab with the intention of fashion and other reasons that doesn't commute with Islam, then her wearing of the hijab is useless.

Donning the hijab or head scarves but fitting it with tight body outlining clothes is also useless. In fact, the very act itself is as good as insulting the true meaning behind the wearing of hijab.

Furthermore beauty lies in the within. The character of a woman is far more beautiful than caked up face and botox. Hijab also does not necessarily mean that a woman's natural beauty is marred and that she is hiding her ugly scars under the head scarf. In fact I have personally met a few beautiful Muslim women who proudly wear their hijab.

Islam also forbids changing of personal natural features on his or her person. To change their features means that the person is not satisfied with the gift that Allah s.w.t has given him. To go under the knife is also an insult to Him as you are trying to be Him as you change your features to make yourself more beautiful.

If wearing a hijab makes a person on the street thinks that a hijab wearing woman is less beautiful, then that person is really shallow. Facial or exterior beauty is nothing compared to the inner beauty. What good is a million dollar smile and sexy body only to know that her character is as good as the devil? What good does spending thousands of dollars for a nose make over only to have it redone in a few years time?

It is all in the mindset. It is how the woman feels about herself. If she feels that wearing her hijab is tarring her beauty status, then she will forever find something about her that will mar her beauty status. But if she thinks that wearing a hijab is to protect herself from unwanted sexual attention, to protect herself from being compromised, then she will feel happy and satisfied with herself.
