Choosing just ten foods is hard, because there are few things I will not eat! It was quite difficult to narrow my choices but after careful consideration here's what I've come up with.
1. Tomatoes are simply delicious whether eaten raw, stewed, grilled or turned into pasta sauce. These red wonders fight cancer and are used in the cuisine of just about every country on Earth. I like to put them in a sandwich, and sometimes I'll buy some of the smaller cherry tomatoes and eat them with olives and small portions of goat's cheese as a snack.
2. There's nothing quite like the taste of some fresh blueberries. They are great for breakfast on top of some cereal or just on their own. Here's an idea, take a handful of blueberries and drop them in your blender. Add some frozen yoghurt and a touch of organic milk and mix it all up. Bingo, you've got a fantastic breakfast to start your day.
3. I usually try to get at least two or three servings of strawberries a week. They are just as delicious as blueberries and they have all the right vitamins and minerals to keep you healthy. Why not incorporate them into a cake, biscuit or pie recipe?
4. You probably weren't expecting this, but chocolate is next on my list. Dark or light, with or without almonds or peanuts, it evokes such a pleasurable response and it's good for you, at least that's what is now being said about dark chocolate. Countless dessert recipes in North America and Europe are now either partially or completely chocolate based. It's the perfect ending to any meal.
5. Not everyone will agree but I think curry is one of the most mouth watering foods available today, and it's one of India's greatest contributions. I'm talking about the recipes like vindaloo, jalfrezi and tikka masala. Scientists are now saying the spices contained in a curry dish like turmeric, cumin and coriander might slow the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Delicious and good for the brain, what more can you ask for?
6. Call me old fashioned and sentimental but my mom's chicken soup with two or three slices of buttered brown toast is the best cure not only for the flu but also for when you're down in the dumps.
7. Bean and vegetable chili, cooked in a big pot with potatoes, green and red peppers, carrots and some onions. This is especially comforting during the tough Canadian winters. I like to eat this with lots of bread rolls. It's filling and very tasty!
8. Southeast Asian dishes are hard to come by in my current location, but I'll never refuse chicken or beef satay, or gado gado, an Indonesian dish with raw and cooked vegetables served with a tangy peanut sauce.
9. A dish from the Canadian province of Quebec called poutine. It's french fries with lots of gravy and topped with cheese curds. Again, it's a good dish to eat in winter.
10. What I really miss are Canadian breakfasts! Back home I can get pancakes with maple syrup, scrambled eggs, omelettes with vegetable and/or cheese fillings and french toast. The list is endless.
