Islamic festivals: The spirit behind Eid -ul-Adha

Eidul-Adha verged back years before Islam was finally completed. During Prophet Ibrahim a.s, Allah s.w.t sent out a message to his beloved prophet in a form of a dream to sacrifice his prince, Ismail. Unlike any sacrifice, the dream depicts Prophet Ismail a.s to slaughter his own son instead of sending him off to war, as what many others had thought at that time.

Like any other fathers in the world, the thought of killing his only child was abhorred and heartbreaking. As stated in Surah As-Saffat 102, Prophet Ibrahim a.s approached his son and told him of the dream. In his reply, Ismail said "O my father, do as you are commanded, Allah willing, you will find me patient."

In their unbreaking faith in Allah s.w.t, they both carried out HIS command. But just as the sacrifice was to be carried out, a message was sent from Allah s.w.t to Prophet Ibrahim a.s to say that he had passed the test of faith. In replace of his son, a Kibas was exchanged and the sacrifice, Qurban, was carried out.

The act that was carried out by the father and son depicts their love, unending faith, patience and even willing to sacrifice oneself for their religion. From then on, every Eidul Adha, Muslims around the world does Qurban to not only commemorate the faith that both father and son had on Allah s.w.t but to also does alms and charity as the meat from the Qurban will be distributed to the needy.

However, the spirit behind Eidul Adha does not stop there. From first Syawal to ten Zulhijjah in the Islamic calendar, millions of Muslim around the world flock to Mecca, the holy city of Islam to answer the call of their Maker and also to complete the obligatory last pillar of Islam, doing the Haj.

Haj wasn't made a compulsory obligation until Prophet Muhammad s.w.s received a message from Allah s.w.t on the sixth year of Hijrah to decree that doing the Haj is an obligatory. Doing the Haj was originally depicted from the history of Prophet Ibrahim a.s when he left his wife, Siti Hajar, and his son Ismail with nothing else but a skinful of water and a pouch of dates at Mecca where it was a barren desert ground at Allah s.w.t bidding.

Even when her rations had finished, Siti Hajar's faith in Islam had never once faltered. She marched from Safar to Marwah in search for food and water on the seventh round, she suddenly heard a loud sound and followed the trail. At a few distances away, a gushing pool of water was found. That source of water is what all Muslims knew as Zamzam.
