The best way to get fit is to find a form of exercise that you enjoy, and a way of eating that you can live with. You can listen and learn from others, but without finding what works for you on your own, you won't stick with anything you hear, read, or try that is someone else's way, regimen, religious workout, or program that isn't a good fit for you. While you're trying your new way out, learn to become aware of your body and your feelings. Pay attention to what your body is telling you. Your body will tell you when you're in too much pain, or too hungry. Conversely, it will also tell you when you're not really hungry (or hungry enough to eat all that you've just added to your plate) and you'll know in your heart when you aren't pushing yourself enough. When exercising, don't be afraid to push yourself a little bit on a regular basis, as the body responds to the "good stress" of exercise. If your time is very limited, then choose one aerobic exercise that you can live with as well as some form of resistance exercise and do these at least three times per week. Drink lots of water everyday, and eat sparingly, but regularlymany times throughout the day, rather than 3 big meals. Eat balanced, nutritionally dense foods that include plenty of protein, fruit, vegetables, and carbohydrates in the form of nuts and whole grains. Don't try to eliminate fat from your diet or you will not feel satiated after eating, and want to eat much more than if you allow yourself to have good fat in your diet with every meal. Good fat being mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats that are present in extra virgin olive oil, canola oil, and the omega-3 fats in fish, nuts, and avocados. Set small goals for yourself, then reach them. If you find that you're having a hard time staying with the program you've created for yourself, then re-evaluate what it is that is not working. Is it the form of exercise? Is it too hard or too boring? Then change it. Mix it up. The bottom line is that everything you do, whether it be walking, running, biking, swimming, or just standing more than you used to, is helping you more than just sitting around letting your body and mind become unfit and more susceptible to disease and injury. Exercise, eat quality foods in the right amounts, get plenty of quality sleep, breathe deeply, be kind to yourself and others, and let love into your life until your body, mind, and spirit are in balance. These are the things, or "the way" in this author's opinion, to get fit.
