How to get involved with helping the environment

The world that we live on is truly in need of those who want to make a difference and help to fix the environmental crisis that we are in, and it isn't just the things that you see on the news like global warming. Chemicals from large corporations are being dumped in third-world countries, our rain forests are being cut down at an ever increasing rate and even our oceans are in peril.

If you really want to help with environmental problems, first look at your own everyday life. DO you drive everywhere? Do you leave the lights on when you go out of a room? Do you consume products from companies that do not follow environmental standards? Changing simple things like these can contribute greatly to assisting the environment. Switching your light bulbs to compact fluorescent ones, you will save lots of energy as well as money. Carpooling to work or school instead of going alone is a great idea as well. Using less chemical based products and more organic products may seem more expensive, but it will make your house smell even better and won't harm your body. Washing your car is something that you may not think much about, but the run-off soap will run into a storm drain which can lead right into a local stream.

When it comes to organizing locally, there is bound to be a group that is dedicated to keeping your local area clean and environmentally friendly. If you have children, their school science teachers may know of these organizations. If you cannot find one however, you should feel free to start your own group, whether you plan to get your town to recycle, or just cleaning up litter, your little group could grow to many in your town helping and taking notice of the environment.

Simply being informed is a fantastic step in helping the environment. The BBC science/nature section is updated daily and gives credible mostly unbiased information on what is happening in the environment. National Geographic also has a very good section for environmental news on their website.

The Environmental Protection Agency is the top political group in the US when it comes to the security of our environment in the United States and abroad. They have a very easy to use website dedicated to helping to inform people about our environment as well as how to help and those who are affecting it. WWF, and no not the World Wrestling Federation, is another privately run agency dedicated to the environment. Greenpeace, although can seem slightly extreme at times, is also another top agency that is devoted to keeping our planet and the things that live in it, healthy.

Making a difference in the way our environment is working now can seem like a far-off task to handle, only for those who are powerful and have money to spend on solar panels and electric sports cars, but if we leave it to them, the Earth will not stand to benefit. Helping the environment is something that we must all do in any way we can, so that the our cradle of life, the Earth, and its wondrous inhabitants will live on for many years to come.
