Okay, let's do some simple math first. 7 days in a week, that's 168 hours or 10,080 minutes total. We find too many excuses or too little time to even give our bodies 10% (or 100 minutes -that's a weeks' worth of TV commercials) a week to improve itself. It is astonishing that most of our days are too jammed packed to dedicate even 10 minutes a day to our health. But there are ways we can incorporate exercise into our daily lives and it doesn't even require a planner or Blackberry. Psst, by the way, that secret wish we have that the 24 hour day magically extends itself to a 25 hour day (don't we wish!)...ain't gonna happen. If your plate of life is so full that you don't think you have time for fitness, here are some helpful ideas:
1. Floss! Studies indicate direct correlations between oral bacteria and overall physical health. People who regularly floss may be less likely to develop heart disease.
2. Wear a pedometer, out of curiosity if nothing else. You'll quickly realize how far you walk everyday without knowing it. According to thewalkingsite.com, every 2,000 steps we take, on average, equates to one mile. Aim for 10,000 daily steps and you could be walking a whopping 5 miles and not even know it. Instead of driving somewhere, walk it. Hang up the office phone and walk to your coworkers desk instead. Park at the farthest point at the store and walk it. You can easily walk at least 1 mile a day if you are mindful in doing so.
3. Okay, this is crazy but surprisingly works wonders. Every night before cooking, assuming you use pots and pans, treat the cookware as weights and start lifting, 3 reps of 15 on each arm. While you are standing at the stove, do 3 reps of 15 up and down on your tippy toes. Multitasking at it's culinary best.
4. Car kegels....need it be explained? Do those kegels while you are driving, flex the butt muscles every time you stop at a light.
5. Driving is also a great time to practice relaxation breathing...in through the nose, fill the belly as if a pitcher overflowing with water, one last gulp of air and release through the mouth. Repeat, and you may calm down enough to avoid road rage, too.
6. Kids offer a very natural form of exercise simply by taking 10 minutes every day to chase them around the yard. Get down and wrestle with them while you are at it. No kids? Chase the dog.
7. Cleaning house? Turn on the music and kick it up a notch. Guess what? You are burning calories you never knew about! Ditch the vacuum and sweep the floors instead
