Best ways to reduce stress

Best Ways to Reduce Stress

Often without warning, our lives can spiral into a cycle of stress beyond what our bodies' natural defense system can tolerate. Before we realize it, stress has taken control. And ignoring the warning signs can lead to excessive fatigue, self-doubt, deep depression, and even severe physical health problems.

Like many people, I lead a rather chaotic lifestyle, but one that I find rewarding and satisfying. I am raising five great kids, working full-time as an assistant teacher, and pursuing my college degree. I believed that as long as I had a plan, was organized, and stayed on top of things, I could handle whatever came my way. I wonder what it is that makes us believe we have such super-human strength.

When we have pushed ourselves to the very limits of what the human mind and body can endure and consumed every drop of our reserve, finding ways to reduce stress is critical. Here are a few stress relievers that I have found helpful.

Prioritize

No one can do everything, so stop trying. Make a "to do" list and then number one through five beside the things that are the most important to you. If you go to your son's football game, you may not have time to mop the kitchen floor. And believe it or not, the world will not come to an end. The floor will still be there to mop tomorrow.

Share the Load

Don't be afraid to ask for help. Your spouse and your children are quite capable when they need to be. They may not fold the laundry exactly as you do or move the furniture when they vacuum, and that's okay. Let others take some of the responsibility off your shoulders.

Find Time for Quiet

I find that starting my day an hour or so before the rest of the family allows me the time I need to sit quietly, have a cup of coffee, and clear my mind before the rush begins. Allow yourself time for personal meditation. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and focus on relaxing each part of your body. Use this technique throughout your day whenever you feel yourself starting to stress.

Exercise

A vigorous walk is great for reducing stress. Living in the country, I enjoy a long evening walk along quiet country roads or an early morning stroll through the woods. If you prefer, go to the gym and work out, dance, or ride a bike. Choose an activity that you personally enjoy. Surprisingly, finding 15 minutes a few times a week is not as difficult as you may think.
