What is chi?

by Jean Erasmus

Created on: March 04, 2008

Chi is the Mandarin word for something very few Westerners understand. In ancient Chinese thought, it was 'breath of life', thus the close association of breathing with the use and manipulation if Chi in Martial Arts. Chi is found in many other ancient cultures by different names: 'Ki' in Japanese and 'Prana' in Indian Tantra.

But let us take a modern look at Chi.

If you still your mind and consider yourself in your surroundings; you will find my words on your screen, reflecting into your eyes and within your mind. Be aware of this...Now, shift your awareness to your hands, your arms, your body, the chair and room you're in. Be aware of this room being in a larger building, being in a city, a state, a country, on earth, the solar system, galaxy and universe...

Now, back at yourself, look at the skin of your hand. Imagine yourself being microscopically small while you move closer and closer to your skin, moving into one of the trillions of your cells. Deeper and deeper you go: into your DNA, your molecules, atoms, electrons and quarks and eventual M-Branes...

The journey outward and inward is equally daunting; but what is beyond this outer and inner 'reality' of ourselves and our universe?

When we consider Quantum and M-Theory, we are faced with three important concepts which reflect perfectly in 5000 year-old Kabbalah and Tantra concepts: The Uncertainty Principle; The Observer Effect and the concept of matter being asymmetric vibration called 'fermions'.

The Uncertainty Principle: electrons cannot be accurately pinpointed in space-time around an atom's nucleus. They are in fact (as all other sub-atomic particles) waveform existing in all possible states, until observed by an 'observer'; thus the Observer Effect. An observer then turns waveform into matter - possibility into reality. Further to this, all fermions are M-Branes vibrating in 11-dimensional space giving rise to matter as observed. If we look at the concepts of Kabbalah (ancient Western Esoteric knowledge), we see the 'Words of God' spoken in the 11 olamot or dimensions - thus vibrations in 11 dimensions. Tantra (ancient Eastern Esoteric Knowledge), we see that Universal Consciousness (Purusha)turns vibration into matter or 'gunae'; consciousness being 'the observer'.

It would seem then (to keep it short), that consciousness turns vibration or energy into matter. In a metaphorical sense, this means that - considering ourselves - our bodies are projections, our DNA the film and the 'light', universal consciousness.

This is what was meant by the ancient ones, referring to our different bodies: the physical, etheric and astral bodies. In essence, we exist on multiple dimensional levels (11 to be exact), with different 'bodies' occupying the same non-local space-time, experienced as 'local' and 'time-bound' by our 3 dimensional 'physical' brain.

Chi, is then the flow from the 'inner' dimensions to the 'outer' projected 'body'; the so-called 'breath of God'. Thus, if one changes the projector or 'light beam', then the projection will move - change your Chi with inner mind, and the body will follow.
