Wedding planning woes: How to avoid wedding disaster

by Laura Leigh Fields

Created on: March 03, 2008

My wedding was one for the books. If something could go wrong, it did. I had planned for my special day many months ahead of time but when it came down to the final days, it seemed things went all to pieces. By no means was my wedding a flop but, it came close a time or two.

The simple things were the ones that no one told me. I had the big picture painted but the details were very vague. I don't plan on getting married again so I have no hope of learning from my simple mistakes but maybe you will be able to learn something from my mishaps.

Between my husband and I there were over a hundred guests at our wedding. We didn't get to properly greet everyone. There were many people there that I never even got to meet. People were flocking around everywhere. Rumors were flying. A lady even punched her boyfriend in the nose and left him there without a ride.

The guests are an important part of the wedding and the reception. Think about whom you are inviting and how they will carry themselves. If you think there could be potential problems, avoid inviting those people. You might also want to consider how many guests you want and how big of a crowd is too big. You can have questionable guests over for a celebration at another time so they don't feel left out.

My husband and I aren't rich but we were responsible for all the wedding expenses. Rather than going overboard on decorations, planners, and things we didn't need, we cut corners and did things ourselves. Our close friends helped us with decorations. Our guests brought covered dishes. We left disposable cameras on the tables for the guests to take pictures.

Things worked out well in theory but still little things went wrong. Children got the cameras and wasted pictures; a few cameras even got thrown in the lake. The decorations weren't exactly the way I wanted them. The food was cold by the time we ate. Still, things worked out fairly well.

The weather is one thing that will always remain unpredictable. I watched the Weather Channel everyday leading up to my wedding. There was nothing but sunny skies in the forecast. Everything was perfect for my celebration outdoors.

A few hours before the wedding, it came a downpour. Just when things looked pointless, the sun popped back out. The rain did a number on the ground, though. Every time I walked, my heels sunk into the ground. It felt like I was dragging a hundred pounds on my ankles. An extra pair of shoes would have been a bright idea. It is also good to have a back up
