Often we hear popular sayings, but don't really see or understand their full meanings. Realistically, one could write volumes on some of the shortest, simplistic sayings that hold so much meaning.
"With a friend like you, who needs enemies?'
-Unknown
At first blush it seems this is definitely a friendship about to come to a screeching halt. Your friend has done something to upset you and you are hurt because it is the last thing you would have expected from them.
"True friendship comes when silence between two friends is comfortable."
-Dave Tyson Gentry
It is very special to be in the same room with someone and you are both silently doing your own thing. Maybe she is reading a book and you are writing on the computer, but still you both take comfort in the other being near and are able to share so much while saying so little.
"The secret to friendship is being a good listener."
-unknown
I think every guy who plans to have serenity in his relationships should listen up here. Get a big black marker and write that on your bathroom mirror so it's one of the first things you see each day. Trust me, take it to heart and your life will go a whole lot smoother.
"One loyal friend is worth ten thousand relatives."
-Euripides
I don't think he meant this as a testament to the harmony, affection, and understanding that relatives inundate us with. As a matter of fact, I would bet that he wrote this 5 minutes after his mother-in-law walked out the door after a one week visit.
"A friend is a present you give yourself."
-Robert Louis Stevenson
I think that has some truth Rob, but I must be a crappy shopper because I'm always in the "returns here" line-up of life's relationship big box store.
"In prosperity, our friends know us; in adversity, we know our friends."
-John Churton Collins
This one's easy. All you have to do is win the big lottery and then burn through all that money while partying and carousing with your new friends. Then a year later call them all and say, "My moneys all gone. I owe thousands to the IRS that I didn't know about. Can you help me out?"
"A friend in the hand is better than two in the bush."
-not sure
I may have this quote mixed up with something else, but regardless, if my friends were of the opposite sex, I would rather be with the two in the bush.

Genuine friendship is hard to define in language; words cannot adequately explain the impact such a friend has on one's life.
Friendship is a basic ingredient of life. It is no surprise then that there is a wealth of popular sayings about friendship.
by Vicki Phipps
We've all heard those lines and rhymes people use to describe friendship, but do we ever stop to think, "What do they mean?"
