Kids' crafts: Making a stylish woven purse

Miniature woven purse

What you will need:

1 ball of parcel string,
Thick Wool of your choice,
Thick needle,
Metallic string,
Assorted buttons,
Ribbon or wool for handle,
Weaving box (Home-made will require craft knife).

Parent/Adult: If you are planning to hand-make the box then you will need a long, thin shoe box and a craft knife. Make thin slits using the knife along both thin ends as shown in the picture on the right. Make sure that you do the same amount on both sides. Make slits approximately 0.5cm deep. Amount of slits depends on box size

1. Cut parcel string into long strips and place so that one end of the sting is in the slit on the one side and the other matches up on the other side.
Do this for every pair till all the slits are filled.

2. Thread the thick needle with the thick wool of your choice. Then attach the wool to the first piece of string with a double knot and then proceed to go over and under the string as seen below. Once you get to the end of the row work back up the side using an opposite under/over pattern to the line before (as shown in the picture)

3. Once you have worked your way all the way up the string using the same method carefully remove the parcel strings from the slits (trying not to disturb the wool.)

4. Once all the strings are removed you will be left with a long piece of woven material with strings hanging out of the ends.
Secure the piece of string by tying them in tight

5. Take one of the ends and fold it 3 quarters of the way up the length of the woven material. Then sew the sides up using the needle and the metallic thread. Once this is done turn inside out so that you can only faintly see the metallic thread.

6. Once turned inside our your purse should look like the picture on the right.
Next you need to use a smaller needle to sew on the popper button so that the purse can be fixed.

7. Now choose the button(s) that you would like to attach to the purse. (We have used just a simple button to give a simplistic, stylish effect.)
(Thousands of different buttons available on our website PLUS custom made.)
Sew onto purse using normal thread and a small needle.

8. To create the handle for the purse out of wool cut off desired length of wool and attach on the underside of the flap.

9. Once you have done this you can how go out and show off your own, unique, miniature, woven purse around the high-street.
