In order for us to know the significance of this Surah Al-Fatiha', one must understand the meaning of all the seven verses. Below is the nearest translation to the English language:-

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful (1) Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, (2) The Beneficent, the Merciful. (3) Owner of the Day of Judgment, (4) Thee (alone) we worship; Thee (alone) we ask for help. (5) Show us the straight path, (6) The path of those whom Thou hast favored. Not (the path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray. (7)

All the seven verses of 'Surah Al-Fatiha' was sent down together to our Prophet Muhammad in Mecca more then one thousand four hundred and twenty nine years ago. Only Allah knows how great Surah Al-Fatiha' is.

As the meaning suggested, we praised Allah and ask for protection. Only to Allah we ask for help and to guide us to the straight path. Muslim all over the world recite the Surah Al-Fatiha' daily; a minimum of seventeen times daily which is compulsory when we do our daily praying five times a day. This is what the praying is all about.

Why they called it Surah Al-Fatiha'? Al-Fatiha' means the beginning(opening). The Holy Quran is begin with it. There are so many other symbolic names which refers to the Surah Al-Fatiha'. Some of them are :-
Ummul Kitab' : Which means the first Surah of the Al-Quran and its concluded all that contains in the Holy Quran.
Al-Mathani' : The seven verses that is repeated again and again;
Al-Quran' : The samll picture of the whole of the Al Quran;
Al Hamdhu' : It is name so because we praise Allah day and night;
Al-Waqiah' The Protector : Only from him we ask for protection;
As-Sholah' A praying is considered invalid if you forgot or did not recite Surah Al-Fatiha';
As-Shifa' ' and Al Ruqyah' : Which means the remedy and medicine from all kind of illness.

Once a group of thirty of Prophet Muhammad best friends was on their routine patrol. They were denied permission to camp near a village. It happened that night the village head was bitten by a snake. Panic and do not know what to do they ask Prophet Muhammad friends for help. They recited Surah Al-Fatiha' seven times and some other verses from the Al-Quran. With Allah's will, the village head recovered immediately.

On another occasion, some friends of Prophet Muhammad met a man who was possessed. They recited Surah Al-Fatiha' a few times and that man recovered completely.

Surah Al-Fatiha' can be recited for any occasions and for all purpose; be it the birth of a new born, for the sick or the death of a dear family or fellow Muslim, when you are sad or afraid of something, asking for protection or even when you are unable to sleep at night. Allah Will Always Help You If You Faithfully Ask Him.
