Growing older and still playing video games

I'm 27 years young. I thought it would take me at least until I was 50 to use that really really dumb expression. But I feel it every day. People my age are complaining that they're getting old, they're getting married, having kids, getting dogs and yards. That's all well and good, but I don't care if you have 4 kids and a trailer, if you're 27, you're young.

Maybe I feel this way because the things I did as a kid are still sources of joy for me now. Remember the joy you felt going to the movies as a kid? The popcorn, the soda, the cartoons. I still go to the movies at least once a week, and I still love it just as much. But, perhaps nothing has brought me back to the golden age of my youth as much as video games.

I've had them all. Atari, Nintendo, Genesis, Super Nintendo, Dreamcast, N64, I even had Sega CD, PS2, Xbox, and now Xbox 360. And I play. Boy oh boy do I play. It is not uncommon for me to pop in a game, blink, and have it be 5 hours later. I can't stop playing. And I've wondered, several times in fact, if there's something wrong with me.

But then I'd look to my grandfather...70 years old, and HE still plays video games. He can't get enough. And I see a sense of wonderment in his eyes when he plays. That same feeling of discovery you had when you went into the neighbors woods as a kid. And the two of us would play together, for hours. So there's that, the social aspect of it. There's nothing more rewarding than schooling your little brother in Madden, watching him throw the controller down in protest. Or, better yet, blaming his loss on the controller itself, throwing it in anger, RESETTING the game in the process. ouch.

So yes, I play games. In fact, I just got two new games today. And I think about the future, ahout really getting old, turning my back on the simple pleasures of youth. And I say no. I refuse. I want to play games.
