A guy's guide to planning a first date

by Danielle Kaufmann

Created on: March 03, 2008

Okay, so you've had a thing for this girl for months now, you finally gathered the courage to ask her out and...She said yes! Take a few minutes be elated, be ecstatic, compose yourself...NOW, about the first date.

Chances are good that your date is going to expect dinner. So you have a few choices, make dinner or buy dinner. Most women are a least somewhat impressed by a guy cooking them dinner, but unless you know the girl really well she might be somewhat uncomfortable hanging out in your house while you cook dinner. In most cases you will probably want to avoid that on the first date. That doesn't mean that you can't showcase your cooking abilities though(assuming that you can cook). A picnic is a great way to show off your cooking skills, and it shows that you put thought into your date. If the weather isn't appropriate for a picnic, or you can't cook, a restaurant is always allowable.

If you know what she likes to eat you can work that into your planning. She likes Italian, find a small, privately owned Italian restaurant.Do you homework, stay away from the chain restaurants(this shows once again that you put thought into it) and take the road less traveled. After all anyone can find the nearest Olive Garden, but you are not just anyone. One small tip on the restaurant topic, make sure it is in your budget. No one is going to be impressed by a fancy Italian restaurant if you don't have a way to pay the bill. Also make sure to leave a decent tip. No one likes a poor tipper, and if she has ever been a server she will notice.

Now that you have dinner planned what next? First off let me say that I don't think a movie is really a good idea. If you know that there is a certain movie she is dying to see, then by all means take her there, other wise find something more interesting than staring at a screen. Why watch people doing things when you could be out there doing them yourself. Think outside the box on this one. Maybe you could have a private class somewhere, martial arts schools will sometimes give them if that is something that she is interested in. Maybe there is a local art studio you could check out, or a museum. Remember you are supposed to be getting to know one another, so plan an activity that allows you to talk while doing it. My best advice is to plan your activity around her, does she like books, go treasure hunting at a used bookstore, animals, take a tour of your local animal shelter and spend sometime petting the adorable little puppies.Maybe
