Product reviews: Jelly Belly sport beans

Can candy actually make you feel more energetic? If the folks at Jelly Belly have their way, the answer will be yes.

Jelly Belly is a company famous for their designer jelly beans, in flavors most people would never dream of. They have buttered popcorn, jalapeno, cappuccino, toasted marshmallow, and even Dr. Pepper. Each package comes complete with a "recipe guide" so you can make even more flavors simply by combining 2 or 3 beans in a single bite.

Now Jelly Belly is hoping to be on the front lines again, this time with a candy jelly bean that can provide an extra boost of energy.

Billed as Jelly Belly Sport Beans, they are available in three different flavors: Fruit Punch, Berry Blue, and Lemon Lime. When I first heard about these, I was a little doubtful, but still willing to give them a try. Online, from the Jelly Belly website you can grab 24-1 ounce bags for $22.50. Unfortunately, you can't mix and match the flavors, and seeing as how I wasn't sure what they tasted like, I didn't want to order a whole set. Then I found them in a local store for $.99 per bag, and decided to give them a try.

According to the package, each jelly bean contains vitamin B, vitamin C, electrolytes, carbs, and have less than 100 calories in a serving, with each bag being a full serving. Jelly Belly recommends eating one bag with a glass of water prior to a workout, or snacking on a bag during a workout for a little boost.

Each bag of Jelly Belly Sport Beans contains around 15 jelly beans, which doesn't seem like a lot for 100 calories. If you look at the ingredients listed, they contain an awful lot of sugar. I'm not sure how well that works for energy during a workout, but maybe some people will like that boost of fake energy.

The taste of the Jelly Belly Sport Beans is pretty similar to their regular jelly beans. The Lemon Lime is the most intense of the three, with a slight tart aftertaste. The Fruit Punch is identical to the regular flavor, with the soft taste of a Hi-C fruit drink. The Berry Blue is far and away the winner, with a nice mixture of berry flavors.

I didn't notice any sudden bursts of energy, nor did I feel any healthier after trying them. The Sport Beans are a nice snack, but don't expect them to completely change your life, or your workout.
