Living for the Long Haul: The Best Ways to Reduce Stress
Life is an intricate mosaic of opportunities and obstacles. Navigating through this curious web of design is an exciting but challenging task. Regardless of who you are or what lifestyle you choose to pursue, you're bound to encounter your fair share of stress along the way. Learning how to effectively cope and manage stress is an invaluable skill.
In our fast paced, often chaotic world, alcohol, cigarettes, and food often appear to be the quickest and easiest ways to relieve stress. Unfortunately, reaching for these quick fixes merely masks the problem, not solves it, and we end up creating more stress for ourselves in the long run. It's like the age old adage, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Follow these quick and easy steps to reduce stress and ensure your overall health in both the present and the future.
Learn to laugh.
"Laughter is the best medicine." Whoever coined this phrase must have known stress like the back of their hand. In times of mounting stress, there's nothing better than belting out a contagious and unstoppable giggle. It immediately lowers stress levels and reminds us that life doesn't always have to be taken so seriously.
Look towards the simple things.
When stress flows through your body like boiling lava waiting to erupt, look out your window, to the right of you, or just around the bend; there's hidden beauty just waiting to be seen. Whether it's a weeping willow tree blowing in the breeze or a warm cup of cocoa on a rainy day, appreciating life's little treasures fills the soul with ease.
Stop, drop, and breath.
One of the easiest, fastest, and most successful ways to lower your stress level is to take a moment to breathe deeply. Close your eyes, take a deep breath in, let it out slowly, and appreciate what it feels like to be alive. Life moves pretty fast and it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of it all. Taking time to breath not only reduces stress but reminds us of all we have in the present.
Connect to the inner child within.
Many people create unneeded stress in their lives because they take themselves and their lives too seriously. You're never too old to take a wild ride on a swing set, build a castle in the sand, or participate in a game of hide and seek. The innocence and gaiety of childhood is like nothing else in this world, so get out there and relive it as much as you can.
