Poetry: My one and only love

Now i lay me down to sleep
Ever so softly as not to awaken you
I hear your breath like the soft whisper of the wind
Suddenly i feel very alone
I reach out gently to touch you
I need to feel your presence
The assurance that you are there
I don't understand loneliness it is new to me
For i know you have loved me for many years
In the darkness i envy the sleep that holds you
That takes you away even for the night
I resist the feeling to cling to your body
To let you know you are the one that makes me strong
But i know it is a fleeting thought
I cannot have that pleasure
For you have thought all along i was your strength, and i can't disappoint you
For you are the most important thing in my life, you are my life
I dismiss the loneliness from my thoughts
It is not familiar like you
I rest my hand ever so gently on your shoulder, sleep comes slowly, but with it comes the knowledge
That i will awake tomorrow and you will have never known, that the strong woman that faces the day
Knew loneliness and vulnerability of the night.

Unsure how I lost the way,
how I let you slip by,
    how I forgot us
    Enamored by unimportant things,
    people,
    I lost the vision
