Yachting gear reviews: Standard Horizon CPV350 Color Chartplotter

Standard Horizon is a standard in the yachting industry. For years the company has been turning out products that yachting enthusiasts love, but more importantly need. In recent years they have created some outstanding GPS systems for their customer, and each year their offerings seem to get better and better. The latest addition to their lineup is the extraordinary CPV350 Chartplotter.

The CPV350 is more than just a Global Positioning System, and more than one that broadcasts in color. The best features of this one is that it can literally direct your specific location to a specific boat or vessel, and that vessel doesn't even have to be on the water to receive it. This can help quite a bit if you find yourself stranded on the water, yet have someone waiting for you back on land. Your friends can easily find you, and help you get back home.

The CPV350 is also something of a mind reader. When a storm front begins to move in, the system will alert you of this fact, sometimes even before you notice the change in weather yourself. It particularly works well with incoming fog. The system also comes with an optional "fish finder" to help you find where the fish are. This actually broadcasts crisp and clear images right across the screen, helping you uncover just where to go, and avoid the empty spots common with other systems.

This has a 7" display screen, and an astounding 256 color palette. The screen can be split to show to showcase both its regular screen and the fish finder, or left on the full screen mode. This display screen also comes with anti-glare protection to ensure that you can see the display any time of day, even if the sun is blaring brightly against it.

The CPV350 Chartplotter from Standard Horizon retails for $900. However, you might want to look at the complete package, which includes all the bells and whistles you could imagine including the hardware needed to mount the system. This is more expensive, at around $1800. Wether you buy the whole package, or just the GPS unit, you'll be glad you did. This system is an absolute must for any yachting lover that fears getting lost, or wants to keep track of their movements.
