Reflections: Depression

Depression could be defined as sadness or misery; perhaps even despair. The opposite of depression is happiness. I know in this day of no accountability everything must have a name that can be diagnosed then treated with something; therefore we have depression rather than sadness. Sadness is simply an instinctive emotional receptor for something that doesn't go our way. We call it depression because it sounds more serious and it demands treatment.

Depression is a contrived state of affairs. Much like boredom it is the product of the holder. It is something you drive yourself into because you are too detached to address the real problem; sadness or misery. Simply because something doesn't go your way, doesn't mean you need to quickly get some anti-depressants. If something doesn't go your way it means you need to step up to the plate and keep swinging.

You will probably not find a single soul who has not experienced personal death in some shape, financial ruin to some degree or extreme loneliness on some level. Are we all depressed? Is it a bleak, foggy, cold and empty existence for all of us? I don't think so. Most of us simply face reality and take it by the horns.

Each and every one of us is personally accountable for our current state of affairs. You are where you are because of who you are. No one is any weaker or stronger emotionally than anyone else. Emotions are nothing more than mental indicators that something is going wrong. All we need do is to listen to them. We are special; we are humans. We are decision makers. We have free will. We have intuition and are cognizant of our existence.

At the earliest sign of any one of our emotions speaking to us, it is our responsibility to respond. If we become even the slightest bit sad we need to identify the cause for that sadness, remove the cause, then do something to ensure that cause does not return. We cannot just sit back, ignore the situation and let the cause grow, steep and fester like an out of control boil. We need to take accountability and attack the problem at the root.

Whatever happened to us made us sad. Un-cleansed that sadness will eat at our very soul until we fall into the unaccountable trap of contrived depression. It is not enough to simply take charge, eliminate the cause then guard against its return. We need also to reverse the effects of this initial, unanswered attack upon us.

The opposite of sadness is happiness. In order to block the advance of depression we need to inject our aura with
