Making your meals ahead of time will save you loads of energy, stress, and, of course, your valuable time after you get home after a long day. The key to make-ahead meals is to know when you have extra time to do so, for example on the weekends or if you have a short work-day. Whenever you have the energy and not much else to take care of is when you should be preparing meals for later. Plenty of recipes can be found on the internet that are specifically for eating later and preparing now. A very easy one is to cook pasta ahead of time and the sauce as well. Then when dinner time comes around you can heat up the sauce on the stove or in a mirco wave and the sauce will keep the pasta warm
However, if you have a little extra money on-hand, you may want to look into food preparation services where you go to their store and prepare and freeze the food there. They have all of the ingredients set out as well as directions on preparation. They will usually have an extremely large selection of recipes and you can prepare meals for at least two days out of the week in these places. They are becoming more and more popular around the country so finding one shouldn't be to much of a problem with a little research.
Another large part of make-ahead meals is planning. You need to know when you won't have the time to prepare a nice dinner in the week, and then make sure that you have prepared the meals. Don't just cook up a pre-made meal because you are feeling lazy, but only when you don't have time to do otherwise. If you get into a habit of using the meals too often you will only make things harder when you are really strapped for time and ate the meal you had planned out already.
Make sure that you have what you need to prepare. Not just the ingredients but also a label and freezer bags. The label will keep you informed as to what is in your freezer and when you had planned to eat the dinner, and the bags are essential to make-ahead meals. Make sure they are large and are made specifically for your freezer, not just a zip-lock bag.
Making dinner after a long day can be tiring, frustrating and even stressful. But it doesn't have to be. Making you meals ahead of time will allow more time to yourself, healthier and more regular eating patterns, and you wont have to heat up leftovers after a long day again.
