Internet marketing: Getting started

Some Simple Tips to get your Internet Website Started!

Let's talk about Internet Marketing. For those of you who know only a little about computers and less about the Internet, well, I would have to give you a lesson on "Internet-ese" here to explain it all and we don't have that much room! If you don't know that much about the Internet, but this sounds interesting to you, you should really take a short course on the Internet to familiarize yourself before you try advertising on it. You can usually find such courses through your local community center or college outreach facility. Then apply the following techniques.

As you may or may not know, the Internet is not owned by anybody, so there is no charge to advertise on it. The only people who do charge for advertising are other website owners, private or public directories, and search engines (Yahoo!, Google, msn.com, etc.) In fact, even though some of the public directories charge a fee to advertise in on their sites, many of them will allow you to add your site to their primary directory FOR FREE! In fact, most of them have automated spiders that crawl the web on a regular basis to find and list new websites in their directories. You don't have to do anything to add them, and you don't have to pay a penny!

Where do I Start?
First, obtain Internet services from a local access Internet Service Provider (which will cost anywhere from $10 to $35 per month) and voila, free advertising. It's that simple. Your Ad will be seen not by hundreds, but by hundreds of thousands of people. It is for this reason that if your product or service is strictly offered on a local basis, be sure to mention it in your ad. There is nothing worse than responding to an ad in your e-mail and finding out the person is in Germany (or visa versa) and therefore not eligible for your services or product.

Next, get yourself a website. You can either do it through MySpace.com, or get your own domain name. This is a lot easier and less expensive than it sounds. Go to a webhost, for example godaddy.com, ehost.com, or sitebuilder.com. I'm not recommending, just giving you examples. Somewhere on their pages, you'll see where they advertise domain name and webhosting specials. Type in what you want your website to be, like bushidopress.com, and they'll tell you if it's available.

IMPORTANT: try to make the name fit your product or service! Search engines and online directories look at the URL (uniform resource locator) which in English means "domain
