Exploring the expression 'the grass is always greener'

Created on: March 02, 2008

The saying, "The grass is always greener" may be interpreted in many different ways by different people. However, most often, it is referred to life in general and how you can find better choices and more happiness elsewhere if you do not already have this.

For example, you may have gotten a job interview at a small law firm, but do not get the job. Then you are upset and feel you are at the end of the road and there is nothing else for you now. Then someone, such as your mother, says the grass is greener on the other side. You think about this and then shrug, moving on trying to find a job, any job. Next week, you stop applying for jobs and decide you need to move in with your mother for a short while because you cannot find work. Your phone rings and it is from a very large law firm and they want to interview you. After your interview, you are hired on the spot, and you don't have to move in with your mom. You are employed, and your mother was right, the grass is greener. Things will look up for you and what happens in life, is because it is meant to be. There is always a plan for you, so don't be hard on yourself or give up easily.

If you jump the fence, you may not find greener grass on the other side. You may, however, only find dull grass and if you waited on the other side of the fence that you started on, with patience, the grass will be greener. This also can refer to the example provided above. If you jump to conclusions, you could end up changing your life drastically. There will always be both positive and negative aspects to life, and we must learn to deal with it.

Sometimes it is only human nature to react immediately, such as relocating if there is no job success within one week, or adopt a child if you cannot get pregnant within one year. Sometimes things just have to run its course, but if it is meant to be, it will happen with time.

If you feel your grass is dull, you have two options:

1.) You can change directions in your paths and risk the chance to find greener grass, or
2.) You can wait with utmost patience and the green grass will arrive in time.
