Stress somehow follows us around all day, and even sometimes everyday. When you're not focused on something, there's no doubt that tens of thoughts are running through your head. Don't let stress cut you down, however, because stress can lead to a deterioration of both mental and physical health. Try these simple lifestyle changes to help reduce stress:
1. Massage.
Even if you can't afford a luxurious massage at a pricey spa, you can de-stress in the same way at home. Preferably, you should try to have someone massage you, but if you don't have an extra person handy at the moment, start making use of your own nimble hands. Begin by massaging your scalp. Use the fingertips to gently rub the scalp in a circular motion. You should be able to feel large regions of your scalp moving in a circular fashion. Then, use a brush (the kind with the not-so-numerous plastic bristles) to gently "scrub" your scalp. You can also run a plastic comb through the roots of your hair, gently "scraping" your scalp. After about ten to fifteen minutes of vigorous massage and moderate brushing, your scalp should feel tingly. You'll feel quite relaxed after just one session of this. If you have someone to massage your scalp (or feet or body) for you, then by all means, let them do it! It will feel at least five times more relaxing than if you do it yourself. The other plus side to scalp massages? Healthier hair.
2. Spend time with the dog.
Studies show that just petting a dog reduces anxiety and stress. There's an unbreakable bond between a dog lover and his dog, and that friendship somehow helps de-stress humans. Plus, the dog will love it too! If you don't have a dog, go to the dog park or see if your neighbors or friends have one. Take it out for a walk and you'll be hitting two birds with one stone once again: physical and mental exercise!
3. Listen to soothing music.
With all the rap and hip-hop and heavy metal running through the air, there's no doubt that making room for more soothing and relaxing music is a must. Go to your local music or entertainment store and find CD's that are especially composed for relaxation. Your best bet would be a classical CD. You can even listen to your favorite classical music online for free. Lie on your bed and close your eyes while listening to the music. You're also permitted to sleep, of course.
4. Put your counting skills to use.
If you're especially stressed out about a situation, count down from twenty, inhaling and exhaling inbetween numbers. Close
