Assessing popular sayings about friendship

I stumbled across an angel in a gift shop the other day-she was holding up a heart in her hands which said, "Friendship is a Special Kind of Love". Popular sayings about friendship seem to surround us everywhere in our daily lives-on greeting cards, gift shop items and all across the Internet. Most of my email forwards are on the subject of friendship.

Here are some of my favorite friendship sayings:

(1) "GEMS MAY BE PRECIOUS BUT FRIENDS ARE PRICELESS."

Friendship is a rarity-something we cannot put a dollar value on.

(2)"FRIENDSHIP IS TALKING WITHOUT WORDS"

There is a sacred unspoken connection between friends.

(3) "A TRUE FRIEND IS SOMEONE YOU CAN TRUST WITH ALL YOUR SECRETS"

You can tell a true friend anything, without fear of having it broadcast all over the neighborhood. They go to their grave with your darkest secrets.

(4) "A FRIEND IS SOMEONE WHO KNOWS ALL ABOUT YOU AND STILL LIKES YOU"

True friendship is unconditional, and blind to our every fault.

(5) "A REAL FRIEND IS SOMEONE WHO WALKS IN WHEN THE REST OF THE WORLD WALKS OUT"

A man in a community in which I once lived was sent away to prison for a white collar crime. Everyone in his life deserted him except for one loyal friend. That friend stood by him through four years of prison, and saw to it that his wife and children were taken care of in his absence. He walked in when the rest of his world walked out, and he never forgot it.

(6) "A FRIEND IN NEED, IS A FRIEND INDEED"

One of the oldest and most popular friendship sayings of all, and one of the hardest for people to comprehend. At first sight, it looks like a needy friend is a friend indeed. Wrong. Look at the man I mentioned above who was sent away to prison for four years. He was a friend very much in need of some special love and forgiveness. The man who extended his hand to him and his family was indeed a true friend. That's what this saying is all about-a loyal friend being there in our lowest times of need-when we really need someone in our corner.

(7) "A FRIEND IS SOMEONE WHO IS THERE FOR YOU WHEN HE'D RATHER BE ANYWHERE ELSE"

I was on my way to an amusement park with the kids-we'd all been looking forward to it for weeks. A friend called to tell us their daughter had run away from home. Even though I'd rather been at the amusement park with our kids that day, I said without hesitation, "We'll be right there." You see, we'd had a runaway teenage daughter once too. No one came to sit beside us and hold our hand through that horrifying ordeal. I didn't
