Presidential Elections 2008

US elections 2008: Assessing the media's negative impact on the campaign

Where to begin on the medias negative impact on the election? Up to this point in the 2008 the negative impact has had to do with representation of the candidates. We could start with Hillary and Obama, a "choice" between two democrats who have basically all the same policy standards, voting records, and lack of experience in governing. Then there's McCain, a republican who most republican voters are not completely happy with. My major beef with the media, the lack of information and coverage they have given to Ron Paul. But, the real problem is the publics perception of who and what the media is and what its true motivations are.

Beginning with the Democrats problem, Hillary and Obama. It does not make sense that the average American would have chosen these two to decide on for the democrat spot in this upcoming presidential election. Both are junior senators who lack in experience of foreign affairs, a matter which is of vital importance after eight years of Bush. Many other democrats who have since dropped out of the race had much more experience in handling foreign dictators, negotiating, and dealing with matters that require diplomacy. Why would Americans pick two to choose from which are virtually the same in their political experience, ideals, and beliefs? Because the media told them they did, and Americans believed them.

Then there is McCain. McCain has always been considered a moderate republican. He's not tough on illegal immigration, he's not a friend of the NRA's, he is not what one would call conservative on the issues and yet, supposedly he's the popular choice of the republican voters. I thought that republicans were for the most part conservative. Had republicans and all Americans been given more information on Ron Paul, they would have found that he represented many Americans beliefs. Instead the media wasted airtime on Rudy Gilliani, the 911 candidate; on the actor from Law and Order, two candidates that were pumped up prior to the primaries who didn't stand a snowballs chance in Hell at being elected.

What do our three major candidates have in common other than not being well liked by more than half of America? They all plan to keep us in Iraq. Not one of them has committed to bringing the troops home and ending this illegal, costly, waste of the average Americans time and tax dollar war. Those who did say that they would bring our troops home immediately either received no coverage, or we were led to believe that
