Just when you think you have gotten over your interview jitters- the lump in your throat has backed down, the sweat pouring down your forehead has subsided, and your heart rate has slowed down enough to feel slightly composed...the big question hits:
"What are your salary requirements"
Like a deer caught in the headlights, you're paralyzed- you don't want to throw out an unreasonable figure and blow your chances but there's a reason you're job hunting...more money is required.
Here are a few tips to boost your income:
*Do your research before your interview.
- Surf the Internet and find out the starting salary range for the position you're applying for.
-Don't give them a figure right off the bat, negotiate, turn it back on them, ask them what the salary range is for the job
-If they give you a range, respond with " Hmm..thats a bit lower than I expected," or "Yes, that is my income range".
-If you have experience in that field, be sure to outline it. If you have experience in a related field, be sure to put that on the table as well.
- During the salary conversation, if the rate is getting where you want it to be, always turn the conversation back to the responsibilities and show how your experience will fit their needs.
Don't:
-Be cocky. remember, you might not like what you're hearing but they can and will find someone desperate enough to work for cheap.
- Lie about your current income
-push until you seem argumentative or difficult, have tact when in negotiation, and it may just be that if you still don't like what you're hearing, the job might not be the best fit for you!
