Good small businesses to start from home

What all the articles seem to say is start a business with little to no start-up expense. I'm sure everyone will agree that is one of the major deciding factors when considering a home based business. Everyone needs to decide how much they want to spend to start one and how many hours to dedicate to it.

My wife and I run a home based business and before anyone starts thinking 'Good God its Amway." Sorry, that's not it. We looked for years to find a business that met the strict criteria we were looking for. One that allowed us both to work at it and still allowed time to home school our daughter. Of course success was the first concern followed by how much it would cost. We considered several that looked good but invariably, found that they wanted a major financial commitment just to start up then more payments to keep up with 'upgrades' or other stupid incentives.

After years of research and several investigations into pyramid schemes, direct marketing, drop shipping, and MLM., it wasn't looking too good.

Finally, we found a business that required little initial investment, had legitimate on line, physical address and phone support. What we do now is enforce and recover court judgments. Neither one of us had any legal background but we still decided that this is what we could do, still achieve the home school goal and see a profit.

It sounds like you're being a Guido type enforcer from a bad Godfather film, nothing could be further from the truth. There is no contact with the judgment debtor, everything is done through the court, the sheriff's office and a process server. There are literally thousands of unsatisfied judgments out there from civil cases, divorce/alimony cases and other civil actions. Its a recession proof job and in this litigious society, our service is in demand. We're coming up on our third year of doing this and its been a wild ride. We have found several other people in our state that do this work and a few out of state organizations. This is still a fairly new field so many people have no idea how to do it or what it is. A good source of general information:

If this is of interest to anyone, its best to visit your county courthouse and see what procedures are needed to view the docket. Judgments gather interest until paid, so the older the better. Also check the 'lifespan' of a judgment in your state as some can be only a few years and some go as long as 25. You don't have to be a lawyer, para-legal or even familiar with how it works. Just do some research, find the organizations out there, there aren't many but they do exist, ask questions from them and make your own decision.
