I'd find, but that's not true. Here's another one by Jim Hayes.
"An old friend will help you move. A good friend will help you move a dead body."
What does friendship have to do with crime and murder anyway? If we're going to make up sayings about friends and what friendship is, it seems to me that we should leave crime out of it. I prefer the good basic sayings that will pass the test of time and will always be true. They should be the only ones we memorize, like this one by Bernard Metzer.
"A true friend is someone who thinks that you are a good egg even though he knows that you are slightly cracked." I agree whole heartedly with that. Another wise and old Danish saying will be true till the end of time, unless gas prices keep going sky high.
"The road to a friend's house is never too long."
I heard a saying the other day that reminded me of one of my former friends. She believed that she was the queen of everything. The saying was said by the wise Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, but I don't know how wise he'd seem if he should walk up to a friend and say what he said today.
"Yes, we must ever be friends; and of all who offer you friendship let me be ever the first, the truest, the nearest and dearest!"
I don't know about you, but he sounds like a narcissist, "all about me," friend. I've had my share of those, and if you have too, maybe we should simply forget what Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said, but another thing that bothers me about friendship sayings is how people use plants and trees to describe the way we feel about our friends, like this one.
"Plant a seed of friendship; reap a bouquet of happiness." I'm just left to wonder what seeds and bouquets of flowers have to do with anything, but this one seems even more confusing.
"Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together, " by Woodrow Wilson.
Do we really need plants, seeds and cement descriptions? The use of a metaphor might be a good way to explain how friendship is like a seed that grows in time, but if they want you to use your imagination why would they use the word concrete? Imagination involves abstract thought which I always thought was the opposite of concrete concepts.
Now, here's a good and concrete friendship proverb.
"A real friend is someone who walks in when the rest of the world walks out." Where meaning is concerned, I'm left with no doubt, but sometimes people say things in ways that make it hard to figure out what they're talking about, much less what they mean when they write it down, so here's someone unknown who used his common sense and this will be the one I'll leave with you.
"If all my friends were to jump off a bridge, I wouldn't jump with them, I'd be at the bottom to catch them."
My friends have done that for me a time or two.
