Non-traditional weddings: Alternatives to the traditional wedding cake

Throughout the years, the wedding cake has become the focus of a variety of customs and traditions. The first wedding cake, before there was baking powders and baking soda, was baked in the form of a fruit cake. But if you are looking for something a little non-traditional in today's world then consider going back as far as ancient Roman where this co-versed tradition began with a loaf of bread.

In Medieval times a "cake" was considered to be baked flour without the added sugar and spices. The groom would break a loaf of barely bread over the brides head as a symbol of her soon to be lost virginity. The guest would gather up the crumbs for good luck.

The breaking of bread has been recorded through out history as a symbol of giving. During the last supper, Jesus broke bread and said to his disciples "Take, eat, this is my body." Marriage is a lot like a body, it is the union of two people becoming one. As spouses we give our bodies freely to our significant others.

Breaking a loaf of bread is as symbolic today as it was back in Ancient Rome. As with any traditional wedding cake the top layer is saved for the one year anniversary. A loaf of bread is believed to be kept for life. It signifies a strong marriage. Medieval marriages were often blessed with gifts of oatcakes, baked oats and flour. These cakes were piled in front of the bride and groom for them to kiss over. A way of predicting the future number of children.

If you're looking for an artistic display without the confectionery sugar and layers, bread can be twisted, shaped, and baked into any type or form imaginable. Just think of a pretzel, but with a bit more style. You can still decorate it with flowers; have a dipping fountain of olive oil and different spices for guest to mingle around. Take a picture of linked arms with small pieces of bread in hand. There's less mess, and less chance he'll smear anything but the dip across your awaiting lips. It still tastes great with your favorite brand of wine.

Another option you may consider is a pie. A bride's pie as the main center piece can call an attraction to all the unmarried ladies attending your reception. This pie can be made any way you like it. Older versions consisted of mince meat, mutton, or something sweet like fruit. Inside hidden, a lucky unwed maiden seeks to find a glass ring. Whoever shall find the glass ring is said to be the next one married. There won't be any fighting over the traditional flower fling, but just make sure to caution all those who attempt to steal a piece of your delicious pie of what they may find inside.

We live in a changing world where traditions are often times left behind, twisted, or forgotten. Some of those traditions from long ago have been well forgotten today. So if you looking for an alternative to "cutting the cake" then "breaking bread" just might be the option for you. Your guest will no doubt be impressed with the breaded sculpture, loaf, or pie of choice. You'll have them talking about your unique decision way after you children are ready to wed. Who knows you may just start a new trend.
