How to get involved with helping the environment

As reports of extreme weather, global disasters, and animal extinction keep rolling in, many people are starting to wonder if the time has come to pay attention to the environment. There are many ways any average person can start learning about the issues, get involved, and help out. Locals groups, large organizations, and daily habits can all be used to increase awayness and reduce our environmental footprints.

The World Environmental Organization is a fantastic place for beginner's to learn about all sorts of issues, locally and globally. It's also a wonderful place to find additional resources and ideas for helping the environment. World Wide Fund International is one of the largest independent conservation organizations, and offers a wide variety of environmental information too.

Organizations like Greenpeace and the Sierra Club have both global knowledge and impact, with local chapters present in most cities. They act as more than just volunteer groups though, since both serve as major political groups as well. The National Audubon Society is another organization that provides both information, active volunteering, and local chapters for those concerned about birds and other wildlife.

For a more overall wildlife approach, the World Wildlife Federation is an important group for general animal preservation. The website alone has mountains of information of the organization, general issues, political groups, and both international and local volunteer opportunities.

Most people have heard of the Adopt-A-Highway program, but don't realize it focuses on environmental aid. This program has volunteers sign up to keep a particular stretch of highway litter free. Not only does this keep the roads looking nice, it helps prevent the trash from drifting into wilderness areas and helps keep wildlife from ingesting anything harmful. By reducing roadside food, you also help keep wildlife from being constantly attracted to the dangerous area and getting hurt or killed.

Even without joining a particular organization, it's possible to help the environment in little ways everyday. The tiny aspects of everyday life can be tweaked to become more environmentally sound.

- Eliminate the use of plastic or paper grocery bags by carrying your own fabric grocery sacks. The trash generated from carrying groceries alone is a problem. It's easy and cheap to stop using those items all together by buying or making canvas grocery bags with handles for shopping.

- Remember to recycle. It may sound
