What makes a good talk show host? Why are we drawn to some and not to others? Are there specific characteristics that make a talk show host appealing to the viewing audience? Viewers no doubt tune in to shows that interest them, that have hosts who are provocative and titillating. Since television's inception, there's been a continuing list of talk show hosts hoping to garner all the viewers and the ratings and ride that wave of TV success.
The best talk show hosts must exhibit a certain chemistry. Somehow, they've got to seem attractive to the audience, not only visually but intellectually. Other characteristics and talents might be favorable to viewers-such as wittiness and humor. In particular, hosts that work in pairs tend to put on the best shows. After all, they have each other to work off of, bouncing ideas back and forth, competing to be the most comedic or compelling to the audience.
A survey of all the pairs of hosts in television history leads me to say that there's no other co-host team like Regis and Kelly. Yes, I know, I know. You are thinking, but what about Regis and Kathy Lee? Well, first of all, they are old news. Secondly, the viewers, by and large, were not all that enamored with Kathy Lee. It is a well known fact that television viewing of the morning show with Regis grew exponentially once Kathy Lee left the building. And, many would say they just didn't have that chemistry. So, what's so great about Regis and Kelly?
Regis is, well, Regis. What could be wrong with that? He's hip, he's hep, and he's funny. His fan base already exists. He's got some age on him which brings in the "older" crowd. So he's got all that going for him.
And then there's Kelly. She's hip, she's hep, and she's funny. Almost in an effort to counter Regis' age, she's also young, cute, and producing babies like there is no tomorrow. All these characteristics appeal to the younger crowds, men and women alike. Dare I bring up the "C" word again? Yes, the chemistry is definitely there between them. It's not exactly seductive, it's not exactly familial. Suffice it to say, it just is. This is a match made in heaven-er, I mean on the ABC network.
Regis and Kelly each have sparking personalities, a brilliant sense of comedic timing and humor, and just enough self-effacement to really cut loose with some crazy gags. And for a morning show, these talents are perfect. They make us wake up, smile, and want to listen to the tidbits of news they discuss while we sip our coffee and munch our toast. We might even learn some celebrity trivia that may come in handy at the office water cooler.
So, when you are talking about the best talk show hosts, Regis and Kelly will surely be near the top of your list. Able to grab your attention and brighten your day, they will entertain and delight like no other talk show hosts. They are simply the best.
