Commentary: The US invasion of Iraq

There are three basic reasons why the US invaded Iraq.

#1 Weapons-of-Mass-Destruction (WMD). Though many people insist that there were no MWD found in Iraq, the reality is that many chemical submunitions were found, Iraq was about one-year from having a nuclear device, and many reliable sources have stated that the majority of active MWD were transferred to Syria. However, even if no MWD were to actually be found in Iraq, the fact still stands that every other country in the world BELIEVED that Iraq had WMD in inventory. If the government of Iraq began to actively support al Quaeda, these purported WMD would have represented a significant threat to the safety of the United States and other democratic countries. If there had been no MWD or programs to create MWD, than why would Hussein ignore and violate 17 UN resolutions that required him to submit his programs to International inspection?

#2 Prior to the Iraq invasion, only one democracy was in existence in the Middle East, and this was Israel. Hussein had threatened Israel many times with total destruction. The removal of Hussein accomplished the tasks of removing one of many threats to Israel, established a second democracy (sic) in the Middle East, and provided a semi-friendly buffer between Israel and Iran, which is the true threat to the Middle East region.

#3 Oil. Just as Japan preemptively attacked the US in WW2 to enable them to establish control of major oil supplies in Eastern Asia, the US invaded Iraq to ensure that no one country gained control of the Middle Eastern oil supplies. This ensured the continued availability of oil to the US, prevented a possible strangling of the US and Western democracies due to oil embargo, and eliminated a significant amount of competition in the obtaining of Middle East Oil by countries such as France, Germany, etc... (i.e. oil for food scandal).
