Best ways to cut down on life's stresses

Stress! Even the word itself sounds aggressive and invasive and, in truth, that is exactly how this medical condition operates. It is aggressive in that no man, woman or child is immune from its onslaught, especially in the fast pace of our lives in the modern world. It is invasive because, unless remedied quickly it can infect every aspect of our lives, from health to relationships and from work to leisure pursuits. No part of our lives is safe from the harmful and dangerous effects of stress, whether that is health, relationships or careers.

Therefore, this raises the important issue of how we can, as individuals, avoid the conditions that give rise to stress and/or reduce it if when it occurs. The major problem facing us all is in knowing how to deal stress and avoid it affecting our lives, particularly before it becomes a major health issue.

Stress in the work environment

As an integral part of my work there is need to perform an exceptional amount of report and technical writing. Because of the nature of this work it often involves a considerable amount of research. As any student and technical author will know, often the researching element in preparation for the writing project can become quite stressful, especially if you are experiencing difficulty in tracing the data that you need to complete the task. Even with Internet to help, there are many occasions where you simply run up against brick walls, which can drive you to distraction.

The moment I feel the beginning of tension and stress in this situation I immediately take a break. When this occurs during the day, I will go for a walk to a local canal and sit for maybe half an hour watching the waterborne traffic and people walking along the towpath. If I find myself getting stressed after the sun has gone down, I will often wander into the garden and sit on the veranda of the summer house watching the night come to life; studying the wonderful combinations of the stars; watching the foxes and badgers rummaging in the garden or simply listening to the sound of the water falling down to the pond and watching the moonlight play on the water.

In other words I focus all my conscious attention onto the activities that are happening at whichever place where I have sought solace. Doing something different in this way pushes my work concerns deep into my sub-conscious and reduces the worry and stress. I find that I return to my work feeling refreshed and eager to continue, all thoughts
