Short stories: Internet relationships

Martha and Johnathon

She walked into the restaurant head held high, walking with a purpose. She almost appeared regal but for the paisley cane and oxygen tank strapped around her waist. Everyone in the room stopped to look at her as she glided across the floor. She had to duck a bit to avoid hitting her head on the chandelier at her booth.

After sitting and greeting the waitperson, she took the oxygen hose out of her nose and turned the tank off. I waited to see if she'd turn blue and do a face plant onto the table but she didn't. She caught me staring and smiled a warm smile, raising her eyebrows. Her pale face had character lines from laughing. Everything went up. I wondered what she had to laugh about. She had to be sick with that cane and oxygen tank. Surly she got those laugh lines before she got sick. I smiled back and looked back down at my food.

I sensed the gentleman walk in before I actually saw him. He entered from behind me, so I really didn't get a good look but as he passed me I got the scent of musk. He was clad in a dark blue suit and had an air of importance about him. His shoes had the shine of a mirror on them. His styled hair was perfect and he had a strong looking body.

"Martha Derrick?" he asked.
"Jonathan Winfred!" She smiled and her face lit up. Her beauty was simple and natural.
"Yes Martha, it is so nice to meet you finally. I was beginning to think we'd never meet." He took her extended hand in his and sat in the booth across from her.
"I'm a bit nervous about this, it is the first time I've ever done this. After all these months and now, here you are." he said.
"Yes, I'm nervous too Jonathan. I suppose it's only natural, but I feel as though we know each other pretty well by now."
She looked at him as he glanced through the menu. She must have liked what she saw because her smile only got bigger. She took her napkin and dabbed at her forehead with soft ladylike gestures.
After he ordered their lunch he took both of her hands in his. She dropped her eyes and I could only grab bits and pieces of their conversation.
"e-mails these many months", "prettier than your picture", "who would believe this?", "falling in love before we ever met", "given thought to relocating", "be a challenge".
Their lunch came and they ate and laughed, flirting with each other and it was obvious they were having a grand time.
"Michael? Is that you? Michael Jacobs. It is you!" A short, stout woman dressed in pink from top to bottom with big fluffy hair came running up
