How to make friends

locate a new friend, it is time to decide how to initiate the start of a new relationship. It is sometimes easiest to just step right up to a person and introduce yourself but remember that body language speaks volumes. When you decide to initiate contact with a potential friend, carry yourself with confidence. Smile and look the other person in the eye. If appropriate, offer a handshake in greeting and clearly introduce yourself. Never mumble or look down when first meeting anyone. When the other person is speaking, listening and make eye contact. Respond to the other person's conversation with more than "yeah's" and "uh-huhs."

Small talk can be made easily if you have just joined a new group. Ask the other person, how long they've been in the group, or how they heard about the group. At a book club, talk about the book that is currently being read. Keep the conversation light and tailored to the moment. Don't tell the other person your entire life story in the first ten minutes of meeting. Don't latch onto this one person as your immediate "new best friend." Exchange polite conversation and part with, "I hope we get to talk again soon." Good friendships will form without forcing themselves. Be patient when meeting someone new, they may be shy and unsure about a new friend as well.

"The only reward of virtue is virtue; the only way to have a friend is to be one." (Ralph Waldo Emerson, Poet)

It is not always easy to make a new friend but if you begin with honesty and simple pleasantness, it will begin to blossom. If you can be the type of person that you would like to have for a friend, others will want your friendship. Remember to seek others out that share your interests and always put forth a positive attitude. Making a new friend can be a life altering experience that is well worth the effort.
