Once upon a time when I was a little girl in the fifth grade, we participated in a program run by the local police department. Every week an officer would visit our class and teach us all about drugs, alcohol, how to avoid it, and plenty of other very worthy and worthwhile moral lessons.
The officer who came to see us every week was a pudgy little lady full of funny stories and warm smiles. She really connected with us on our own level. I looked up to her a lot. I mean, she eased the fears of the then middle-school bound fifth grader who didn't know what to expect from her older peers. I was prepared to "Just say No," and feel good about it.
Of course, I was very shocked and surprised to hear years later of her shoplifting conviction and demotion from the police department. She had been caught trying to boost some sort of hair product.
You really let me down, officer Klepto. My moral fiber is shattered. ;)
