One of the most popular cities in the United States is best known for cold weather football in a stadium built for a soldier and a leader by the name of Ditka, baseball fields for greats such as Sammy Sosa and the great Harey Carey, and the city itself has a title "the windy city." The city played host to one of the greatest gangsters ever known, Al "scarface" Capone and the end of prohibition. Lets put all that aside and talk about another item that Chicago Illinois is famous forpizza. That's right, good ole greasy, cheesy, pepperoni pizza. Where do we start? Let's find out. We will check out three spots.
First stop, Lou Malnati's Pizzeria (439 N Wells St) a consistent four and five star restaurant. When you step inside the aroma of garlic, pepperoni and fresh dough fill the air. They joint has sports jerseys, pictures and other paraphernalia giving it the Chicago sports look. The staff is friendly and lively which keeps the place jumping. There are also the regulars that add to the pizza parlor setting. Lou's deep-dish crust is buttery so you may want to use a fork; it is also thick and flakey giving the pie the Chicago look and feel. The tomatoes are chunky, sweet and spicy giving that just right taste for the sauce. Lou's is different than the old fashion pepperonis though, sausage is the preferred toping available in patty or chunk form.
Ok, second stop, here we are at Gino's East (633 N Wells St). When you walk in it is dim lit, giving it that dark parlor look with a small ray of light from time to time. Gino's is an out of town favorite because it allows the customers to draw and add graffiti on the table and walls to show the number of different people that have came in to scribe their name in the parlors history. Now the food, oh yes, the polenta crust is so big it's hard to get your mouth to stretch around the slices. The pizza comes with rich and creamy mozzarella and zesty tomato sauce.
Okay, last stop, Vito and Nick's (8433 S Pulaski Rd) a booth and table, jeans and t-shirt establishment. The blue, yellow and red overhead bulbs lights the area to top off the fun pizza parlor look. Okay so we are here for the pizza so let's dive in. The restaurant has a signature cracker thin crust with oregano and oven-browned mozzarella. No matter what your topping is be it olives, ham, sausage, pepperoni or your favorite Vito and Nick's is a fun place to eat with Chicago's best pizza.
