The dangers of labeling a child

The dangers of labeling a child are many! Children learn what they live. If a child is taught that she is a worthwhile person, she will begin to believe it. However, if a child is repeatedly told that she is awkward and clumsy, do not become too surprised if you have an uncoordinated little girl on your hands!

If a child repeatedly told that he is a poor reader, he will reach adulthood unable to even read material written on an elementary school level. Tell a child that he is stupid and will never amount to anything, and your child remains an underachiever throughout his adult years!

Children need TLC! Those three little initials were a popular acronym-Tender Loving Care! My former Pastor's wife, Andrea Furman lived by these principals. When her three children were just babies, she would sing to them, "don't be naughty" several times and "mind your mommy!" The next time, the Pastor knew little toddlers were walking around in their diapers saying those very same words! Pastor Rex was slightly annoyed! Why didn't his wife say to his children,"mind your daddy"? The end justified the means, my former pastor discovered! His three talented children were never naughty and all are actively involved in Christian service!

Labeling handicapped children as mentally retarded is a terrible label to put on any child! His peers will quickly use those words as an insult! They will make his life not worth living! That is why special education is so very important.

Pastor Rex and Andrea have at least two hearing impaired grandchildren. One of their sons fell in love with an attractive young lady who had a genetic problem! Hearing impairment ailments ran in her family!

They took their five-year old daughter out the public school system in the State of California and placed her in a special school for the deaf! The public elementary school was getting a great deal of money because of the legally deaf little girl! They did not care that she needed specialized treatment! The State of California put the little girl back into public school against the will of her parents! The school system did not care whether she received a quality education!

The little girl had fluid removed from her ear drums and has been given a hearing aid. She spends all of her time playing by herself. She knows that she is different and believes her normal classmates will fail to understand her. She does not want their sympathy or their ridicule. However, there was a little boy in her class that became fond of her, but she continued ignoring him. He was too young to understand her indifference! He falsely believed that the little deaf girl did not like him, or anyone else!

Pastor Rex, Andrea Furman, their son and daughter-in-law did not understand why God gave them two legally deaf children to raise! It was God's Holy Spirit that gave them the reassurance and hope that they so desperately needed. God gave special children to special parents and grand parents who would take good care of them! Some day in God's presence the little deaf children will sing a shout a joyful victory in Jesus Christ, their beloved Lord and Savior!
