heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words." Author Unknown
The most unexpected and unexplained kind of friendship is when neither friend has to work at the bond between them, it just exists. An intimate, enduring connection can be suddenly formed as two strangers are brought together in circumstance. C.S. Lewis identifies this delight, when such a likeness is discovered, stating, "Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: "What! You, too? Thought I was the only one." Out of the blue, one finds a kindred spirit. Aristotle explained the magical phenomenon centuries ago, defining friendship as "A single soul dwelling in two bodies." I found such a close friend with my college roommate; though we possessed little in common, we had a relationship fueled by laughter and respect, and we immensely enjoyed each other's company. Even with different hobbies, tastes, and opposite social circles, we were simply profound friends.
Puzzle Piece #4: A Persevering Friendship
"Those truly linked don't need correspondence. When they meet again after many years apart, their friendship is as true as ever." Deng Ming-Dao
Yesterday, I finally tracked down an old friend. We were inseparable our beginning years of high school, but with the circumstances of life, she moved away to another town and eventually we lost contact. I got married several months ago and I desperately tried to track down her whereabouts, to no avail. But, she appeared in my life again suddenly yesterday afternoon as I found her online. Excitedly, I sent her an e-mail explaining how long I had hoped to rediscover our friendship and how regretful I was that she couldn't attend my wedding. Her reply greatly affected me, "You've been my best friend since we were teeny boppers and you always will be my best friend no matter what." Such a statement embodied the unconditional love that a true friend relishes upon you. Eustache Deschamps explained this love as, "Friends are relatives you make for yourself." Time may change two friends, but once a best friend is merited, their friendship endures.
To have a friend is to be rich in love. As with anything worthwhile, friendship can bring us joy and laughter as well as pain and cloudy moments. Perhaps that is why we treasure those sayings that strike the core of authentic friendship. It may not be perfect, but it is real. Despite the hardships, a true friend is a persevering companion through the ups and downs of life.
