Science Fiction Double Feature
Frank has built and lost his creature
Dammit Janet, that ain't till the end. . .it was Dr X in the beginning.
What's not to like about this movie, aside from transvestitism, cannibalism-light, overt hetero and other sexuality played out sometimes, but not always, off camera or shrouded in the haze of lights. . . Ok, so maybe there is a lot to dislike, but while many people griped about these things, the movie really wasn't about them. Sure and well, these things were in it and if you were unable to see the comedy involved, well, I can understand the distaste.
But.
The music is really pretty darn good and O'Brien's lyrics were, if not on Par with John Lennon's, of the nature than stuck in your head.
It's astounding; time is fleeting; madness takes its toll. Just a jump to the left, they sing, and perhaps it was this line that put the most fear in the conservatives at the time. . .anything to the left cannot be good, can it? But then, they took an immediate step to the right.
What's to like? Well, for the guys, there is Columbia and, of course, a young Susan Sarandon running around in her white undies (Bra and Panties - yes everything is covered). For the Girls, well, there is Sir Meatloaf. Ok, well, then Rocky? How about Tim Curry in Lili St.Cyr lingerie. . .
Actually, what to like is that the show is not serious and is, more than anything, crafted around the 1950's - style Science Fiction B Movie, a send up. And in its campy way, it does a really good job of it.
But you have to go to the theater to see it. Watching at home just will not cut it, not even if you have spent $200,000 on a home theater. The movie really is an interactive thing anymore. Go early, and have fun. Not everyone dresses up, but those who do are usually pretty fun to talk with. And no, they won't harass you if you don't know the lyrics to every song. They were RHPS Virgins once too.
(This has nothing to do with the movie per se, but, once, our pastor was looking for a new chorus for services, Someone started "In the velvet darkness. . . " others filled in the rest of the first verse. . ."Of the blackest night,Burning bright,There's a guiding star.
No matter what or who you are." Almost made it to the service before someone disclosed to her the lyric's genesis. . . ." Lyrics, to that point anyway, seem to fit a religious setting. OK, so we are all going to have to pay for that at some time I guess.)
So, if you, like Tim Curry's Frankie, want to know whatever happened to Fay Wray, go see the movie with an open mind and have fun.
