Complete spring cleaning checklist

When you look around inside your home, you notice the winter season has deposited dust, dirt, and cobwebs into the hidden nooks and crannies of your home. Outside, the snow has melted to reveal leaves, garbage and lifeless plants throughout the yard. Spring cleaning is the only way to prepare your home and yard for the busy summer season ahead.

Allowing dirt and allergens to build up in your home will cause long lasting effects on your house, your family, and your pocketbook. Increased dust can cause and irritate many health problems. This can include breathing problems, rashes, and hives. Washing walls and ceilings, for example, save money by preventing the browning of paint and wall coverings. Regularly maintaining and cleaning items such as appliances and electronics will also save money; they will last longer and work more efficiently if they aren't built up with dust.

The List

To make spring cleaning efficient and manageable, make a detailed list of the chores that need to be completed in each area of your home and yard. With each task, be sure to include the supplies and tools that are necessary to get the job done. This allows you to take an inventory of what you have and what you will need to pick up. You can then make one trip to the store rather than several saving you both time and money.

It is a good idea to make a separate list for each area. You can then decide which areas you would like to work on and either leave the rest for later on or give the rest to others who are helping. To organize your lists and lessen the chance of missing something, stand in the middle of the space and start your list on one side of the doorway and work your way around the room. It also helps to start at the ceiling and work towards the center of the room.

Helpful hints for the kitchen

Things such as garbage cans, the insides and tops of your cupboards, drains, exhaust fans, and the outside of your appliances should be covered in your spring clean. It is also a good time to wash small decorative items, wash window coverings, and polish silver.

A vacuum cleaner works great to collect the dust and dirt from drawers, fans, and the mechanical parts of your refrigerator. If you notice that white appliances are yellowed, you can wipe them down with a two to one ratio of bleach and baking soda in an ice cream pail.

To keep the cords of small appliances together, gather up the cord of each one and use a twist tie or a toilet paper roll to secure it.
