The marriage of Posh and Becks - a truly modern fairytale in which two ordinary people came to be international megastars. A story of a pair of young innocents who rose from nothing to something and beyond. An account of the worlds of pop music and football uniting under very public gaze.
Let's first rewind back a decade or so to when David was an up-and-coming footballer, and Victoria had only just barely got over her embarrassment at being driven to school in her father's Rolls Royce. The year is 1996 and the Spice Girls have burst onto the scene that summer with their smash hit "Wannabe". Victoria is the posh, pout-y and gloomy one of the group, and it wouldn't be unfair to call her the worst singer and dancer of a five-piece of already dubious talent. David, meanwhile, is just starting to do some pretty spectacular things on the pitch including, that same summer, a wondrous goal against Wimbledon, scored from the half-way line.
Barely a few months later and Becks had seen her in a music video, remarking "I'm going to marry that girl". Posh, meanwhile, after being shown a photo of him for a magazine interview, had taken a shine to him and declared she would go and watch him play, and then have dinner with him after wards. Which, it seems, she did. Skip forward a bit in time, and they're going on dates and having first kisses in Porches and before you know it in January 1998 - they're engaged!
So far this all sounds like a sweet romantic tale between a boy and a girl, that could have involved any of us well, without the fame, fortune or fast cars, of course. And it's at this point that the pairing start to gather pace as a celebrity couple, with ongoing media coverage and spreads in glossy magazines. Luckily for them, they've got something to show a baby (Brooklyn), followed by a lavish wedding in Ireland, with crowns and thrones and celebrities. By this point, ladies and gentlemen, I think it's safe to say that they've "made it".
Sweeping aside any rumours of infidelity (on his side) but delighting in more babies (Romeo and Cruz), the Beckhams are still going strong as a married couple. And what Mr & Mrs Beckham are both clearly very good at is self-promotion, be it separately or as a couple. "Brand Beckham" has spawned all manner of items, from his n' hers perfumes, to clothing, to literature, not to mention the countless products that Mr Beckham endorses.
All in all, it's (nearly) been plain sailing for the couple all the way to the present day. Yet their move to the U.S. in mid 2007 is puzzling. David doesn't need the fame nor the fortune that playing in the MLS (Major League Soccer) could bring him. He'd clearly be better suited playing out the remainder of his footballing days at an English club - and it may well have suited him better as well. Victoria however has much more at stake the possibility of becoming a household name in America through whatever direction she decides to steer her career. Still, their megastar status can only grow further and in new and exciting ways perhaps that's what's behind the move.
Long live the Beckhams! And let's see what dizzy heights they reach in another decade.
