How to eat well on the run

Today, families live in a fast paced world and many times we find ourselves rushing from the time we get out of bed till we go to bed. Sometimes, it can be extremely hard to eat well as we rush through each day. This is not good for our health and well being and will eventually take its toll on our bodies. However, with a little planning it is possible to eat better no matter how hectic our days may be.

First, try not to skip breakfast as it is the most important meal of the day. Eating breakfast is important because you have not eaten since the night before and your body will start to go into starvation mode and start to save fat. You will also be tempted to grab a doughnut or some other pastry when you start to feel hungry. Keep small containers of orange, pineapple or apple juice and healthy breakfast bars on hand, so that you can grab these as you rush out the door. Instant oatmeal (takes 1 minute in the microwave) is a good quick, healthy choice in the morning.

For lunch, you may want to invest in a small cooler and some packs of frozen ice so that you can carry your lunch and snacks with you. A cooler also comes in handy if you do much traveling. Many employers now also provide refrigerators and microwaves for their employees, thus allowing employees to bring healthy leftovers or healthy frozen dinners to work for lunch. Packing healthy turkey, chicken or peanut butter sandwiches on whole grain bread are good choices. Lowfat cheeses, yogurt, and fresh raw vegetables can also be enjoyed for lunch. Apples, raisins, and nuts make good afternoon snacks. If you must go out for lunch, try to choose a restaurant such as Subway, or one that offers salads.

Water is essential for good health so pack water in the cooler also. If you must buy a drink from a vending machine choose water instead of sodas. Water keeps the body from dehydrating and helps flush toxins out of the body.

Plan ahead for evening meals especially when you know you will be rushed. You might want to invest in some good cookbooks with easy fast recipes. The Internet is also a good source for finding quick, healthy recipes. Crock pots are a wonderful kitchen tool and if you don't have one, you may want to purchase one. Chicken, beef or other meat can cook on slow while you are away from home. When you return you can throw some potatoes and vegetables in the pot, sit back, relax and enjoy your healthy meal a short time later. Prepared salad fixings are now available, which will allow you to add a salad quickly and easily.

A little planning can make your life easier and your body healthier.
