How to get involved with helping the environment

Whether you live in the wide open spaces of the rural landscape or you are a hip urban dweller, there is probably nothing more important today than helping the Earth's environment. The steps we take now will not only be an immediate benefit to our health (and our pocketbooks!), but they will pave the way to a cleaner, more vibrant future for generations to come. There are literally hundreds of ways big and small that each and every one of us can do our part in taking care of the environment, while making our own little world a safer and healthier place to live.

No matter where you live, you clean your home. From tiny, one-room apartments to sprawling mansions, we all have to do the not-so-fun chores necessary to maintain a clean and healthy living environment for ourselves and our families. Did you know that what you use to clean your home can have a great impact on the Earth's environment? Harsh, man-made chemical cleaners are not only unsafe and toxic to humans and animals, they can cause all sorts of problems when they are released to the environment. Instead, try these Earth-friendly (and just as powerful) alternatives:

Baking Soda is a gentle yet effective cleanser for almost every hard surface in your home. From counter tops to sinks, toilets and even chrome fixtures, it removes tough stains without damaging or scratching. And, it eliminates odors.
To clean wood surfaces in your home, mix one part vegetable oil with three parts water, and add a tablespoon of lemon juice. Mix well.
To eliminate odors in the home, simmer spices such as cinnamon & cloves. This is a save and environmentally friendly alternative to sprays that just cover up odors.
Vinegar and water is an excellent glass cleaner. Use with a squeegee on outside windows for a streak-free shine.
Are your toes poking through the end of your socks? Don't throw them out; they make great dusting and cleaning rags! Finding ways to salvage and reuse items in your home keeps them out of the landfill and helps the environment.

There are many ways you can help the environment outside the home, as well. One of the best things anyone can do is to compost food scraps, yard waste, anything organic that can be broken down (except animal products; these attract rodents & can create odor problems and are not recommended). Composting is so easyjust throw it in a bin, let nature do her thing, and all you have to do is give it a turn once in a while. Your reward? Black Goldrich in vital nutrients, compost is great
