Top 10 simple ways to stay in shape

A wise man once wrote, "Let your moderation be known unto all men." Moderation is the key to staying fit physically and mentally. Here are ten simple ways to stay fit. Use moderation in each area and have fun staying fit and healthy.

- Work- Don't take that early retirement. Working longer will keep your mind and body healthier because of the stimulation in the work place. My mother became a couch potato after retirement and died a few years later of a heart attack. Remember to use moderation as a worker. No workaholics allowed.

-Medications- Meet with your doctor. Do you really need all those pills on a daily basis? Some prescribed medications are not that effective. Consider the recent cholesterol controversy. Are cholesterol lowering drugs really lowering your blood cholesterol levels or is it something else, like eating healthy and exercise? I recently switched from taking over the counter decongestant pills to buying a harmless, over the counter nasal spray. It works better and contains less medication and less side effects. Remember, less is better in the case of medications but always go through your doctor.

-Relaxation- What helps you relax? Is it reading, calling a friend or riding your bike? Purpose every day to set aside a little time for yourself, if only half an hour. You deserve it and your body needs the time to recharge.

-Exercise- That dreaded word can be fun, believe it or not. A stay-at-home mother can pop in a exercise video and dance away with the kids. Take the kids to the zoo where you can walk around and breathe in fresh air. Stuck in an office all day? Walk around the block on your breaks. Take a few deep breaths while walking to open up the lungs. I get plenty of exercise as a nurse because I'm on my feet most of the eight hour shift. Retired? Volunteer with an organization you love and respect. No couch potatoes allowed.

-Challenge Yourself- Learn something new. Go to class. Take a course at your local YMCA or junior college. Have fun meeting new people. You are never too old to learn something new.

-Time Alone- Find your favorite quiet place. Is it a whirlpool or a bubble bath? Time alone helps your body and mind relax and recharge itself. It's a healing process. Don't forget the candles. No noise allowed except your favorite music. A healthy mind complements a healthy body.

-Eat and Drink Healthy- Eating a big meal during working hours is a no-no. What works best for me, so I don't get too sluggish at work, is fresh grapes for a snack,
