The role of faith in politics

by Angela Waddell

Created on: February 28, 2008

The role of faith in politics is one issue that needs to be re-thought. Many people think using religion to determine faith with politics and moral standings is what being an American is all about. We have seen throughout history that the US government has had much control over the American people by using religion to manipulate the Federal laws.

One example is the use of Capital Punishment. Capital Punishment has been used since BC (Before Christ) and is still used today. Some countries have denied or yet disputed the use of capital punishment. Capital punishment is the deadly act of punishing a person who has committed a harsh crime by giving them the same adequate action that their victims faced-DEATH. Not saying that if a crime were to be committed, no justice would prevail. It's time to reevaluate how we think and what we stand for.

The government uses antics from the Bible to determine the fate of another person. "An eye for an eye," is not to be taken into the likeness of murdering a human being just because he or she murdered another. It is said to use wise judgment when determining the consequences of a persons actions.

With same sex marriage, it's not the choice of the government to determine whether it is okay for two men or two women to get married. The act of marriage is religious and not of State. As in the Constitution, it is unjust to have an interaction between Church and State. No one should be told who they should and should not marry. When a man and a woman get married, they are not intimidated by the federal government and the local states government. Why is it different for same sex couples? Is it because it's not a norm in our society? As of 2008, the idea of being bi-sexual has become a norm due to the fact that so many people are gay. It's not a big percentage but it has grown in the last year.

We are now in the days of re-electing a President of the United States and most people are determining who they will vote for, based on a candidate's religious background. The objective of how a person will run this country should not be based upon what religion they are but what they stand for on the issues. Too many people are being judged in this country just because they are not a certain religion. It's almost as if we are back in colonial times.

We are supposed to be of a democratic society but lately it seems as though we are of a bureaucracy. The days of Hitler have long gone and now it is time for the American people to take a stand. The intentions of our government seem to be well taken but the actions of it all are out of order.
