We are witnessing a truly historical chain of events. Before us right now during the current election season is the death of the true conservative. There is a lot riding on this election but for the Republican party the damage may already be done.
I can remember talking to a Republican friend of mine about US politics about two years ago. Back then, I told him that President Bush had done damage to the Republicans that would take at least two election cycles to work out of the psyche of the American public. However, the damage is far greater. The true conservative has almost no place in current politics.
When the original field of Republican candidates came forth a few months ago, there were several hopefuls. As for today, John McCain is the only major contender for the nomination. The Democratic race is very close but beginning to sway in favor of Obama. The other Republican candidates that are now watching John McCain on television were the more conservative choices. Fred Thompson ran under the banner of the "True Conservative Choice" and never really made a serious run for the nomination. Romney is a very conservative Republican and was a candidate that most Republicans thought would win the nomination. He dropped out of the race, "suspending" his campaign. Mike Huckabee has vowed that he would stay in the race for the long haul but is far behind McCain. Huckabee has made no illusions about the fact that his faith plays a large part in his policies and political beliefs. That is hurting him because that is exactly what we have in the White House right now.
The Reagan/Bush-style Republican has had the chance to put policies and theories to work and the results have been negative. So now, the Republican party is reeling and the front-runner is John McCain. McCain is just about the most liberal conservative out there. Why is he at the front of the Republican race? Because even Republicans are sick of Republicans. This is evident because in the primaries the voters can only vote their party. The Republicans are digging themselves even deeper by public comments by people like Bill Cunningham. Cunningham publicly slammed McCain and even went as far as to say "I'm mad at McCain." Don't forget that McCain provoked this tirade by apologizing to Barak Obama for Cunningham's remarks about him and the repeated use of his middle name in hopes of stirring up hate with anyone who is not smart enough to dislike a candidate based on something other than his name. Fox News conservative Sean Hannity actually sided with Cunningham. So now the hardline conservatives are slamming their own party's future nominee because he exercised a little class.
The hole gets deeper and deeper for the Republicans and the shift back to the Reagan-era conservative may never occur. Americans have learned their lesson and the young voters are now coming out more than ever to vote. This is the generation most affected by the Republican policies and the generation that will have to fix it.
One way or another, the conservative Republican will be out of the White House. Americans will not stand for another President whose approval rating was at record lows. Americans are ready for change and their voice will be heard this November. No matter which of the current front-runners is elected, change will take place. That change will filter down to Congress, the States and to the people whom demand it. It is just a question of whether the Democrats make the change or the nuveau-Republicans.
