Drugs are heavily ingrained into our society in many ways. They have many uses that can help us to extend our lives or live a more fulfilling lifestyle. However, there is a fine line between medication, and abuse for most drugs. This line has been blurred, not only by patients going doctor shopping, but even from doctors getting paid for prescribing specific drugs. Then there is the entire plethora of illegal drugs that any use of is considered abuse.
Well, in order to really get to the heart of drug abuse, we have to understand what constitutes drug abuse. As we hear about it today, drug abuse simply means using drugs for non medical reasons. One could make the case that it's more complicated than that, but for all intents and purposes, that is essentially what drug abuse means. There are many reasons that people would choose to abuse substances, perhaps they are bored, or curious. Maybe they want to relax. They may just enjoy the intoxication that various chemicals bring them. They may even be pseudo-spiritual explorers, and are attempting to connect with some form of a spiritual life through using drugs. There are probably as many non-medical reasons for using drugs as there are medical ones.

It's all we can do, regardless of our political, spiritual, or social beliefs, to help remind people why these things can be dangerous, and the possible consequences of partaking in them.
The first argument to make against drug abuse is one of health. We all know that drugs have potentially dangerous side effects. Even prescribed medicine can adversely affect your health. So it seems only right that people become, and stay, aware of how drugs can negatively impact their health. The most obvious, and probably the least heeded, is that smoking anything is bad for your lungs. It's a simple fact. Our lungs are simply not well equipped to handle repeated exposures to very hot, fine particles. They tend to build up in our lungs over time, reducing not only the efficiency which with we breath, but also physically damage our lungs.
Burning substances also has a tendency to create relatively
