Good music is an absolute necessity in a preschool classroom. Music can be used to enhance learning, to stimulate the imagination, as an outlet for all that extra energy, and even to relax during rest time. Music serves so many functions that no preschool curriculum is complete without a healthy dose of it. There is a lot of quality children's music out there but let me suggest some of my favorite artists for kids:
HAP PALMER
Hap Palmer has been a staple in preschools and kindergartens for over 20 years. Ask any teacher and Hap will always be on her list of favorites. With more than 20 CDs by Mr. Palmer, it won't be easy narrowing down the choices. Many of his albums have an educational flavor such as "Two Little Sounds: Fun With Phonics and Numbers." Others are just plain fun like his CD titled, "Sally The Slithering Snake." What all of his music has in common is its commitment to teaching children through song and the way it addresses the needs of the whole child from language development to motor skills, critical thinking to celebrating diversity. Most of Palmer's music is lively, energetic, and very catchy. But if you are looking for something restful and relaxing to calm your class, try Hap's CD titled "Quiet Places." The acoustic guitar, harp, cello, oboe, violin and more are soothing and peaceful. It's a perfect choice for naptime and one I use on a regular basis.
STEVE & GREG
Another favorite of the preschool set, Steve and Greg offer up a wide selection of educational tunes. With their fun and energetic music, these two guys teach important concepts like the days of the week, colors, numbers and even values like friendship and cooperation. Almost all of their songs have a quick beat that encourages dance and movement. I often put on my Steve and Greg CDs on rainy days when we can't go out and play. The kids love to dance and wiggle to their music and it's a great way to get a little exercise into our day. My students' favorite CD is "Big Fun" but they really do enjoy my entire Steve and Greg collection.
RALPH'S WORLD
I discovered Ralph's World when I was a stay-at-home mom. My own kids loved these CDs so much that I had to buy another set for my classroom. They didn't want me to take them to work! Most of the music by Ralph's World is pure entertainment for both kids and adults. With albums titles like "Happy Lemons" and "Peggy's Pie Parlor," you know you're in for some serious sillyness. What I love about Ralph's World is the way each song tells a story
