guilty based primarily on the testimony of a perjuring witness who admitted he had been coached by Johnny Sutton is inexcusable. When good investigative reporting provided much evidence to support the border agents' stories, no one, from the appointed Federal Judge up to and including the President of the United States would declare a mistrial and demand Sutton be held accountable for this travesty of justice that destroyed the lives of two dedicated officers and their families.

Several congressmen, including Congressmen Dana Rohrabacher and Duncan Hunter from California have called on President Bush to pardon the pair and commute their sentence without success. The refusal of elected and appointed officials to take the concerns of Congress seriously and to provide any support for an unbiased trial have further damaged the morale of Border Patrol agents, particularly as this is not an isolated incident: other border agents have since been prosecuted simply for doing their job as best they could under difficult circumstances. In an atmosphere of heightened terrorism awareness, intimidating border protection agents from doing their job has ramifications far beyond protecting the rights of two Border patrol agents.

Johnny Sutton must be required to testify before Congress under oath so that justice may be served not only for Ramos and Compean, but for all Americans. Further, if border security is threatened by Sutton's actions or those of his superiors, Congress must take action to assure that political considerations do not endanger this country.

Nacho Ramos and Jose Compean. . . and all of us as citizens can accept nothing less.
